This is the main section, listing historical performance results for the various mutual fund strategies.

Mutual Fund Strategies
As approximately 80% of fund managers do not beat the S&P 500 year in and year out, we earnestly believe in the concept of active money management. There is simply no reason to buy and hold any mutual fund, stock, exchange traded fund, etc.
The fact that most funds do not beat the overall stock market should not be surprising. Since the majority of money invested in the stock market comes from mutual funds, it would be mathematically impossible for the majority of all these funds to out perform the market.

There are various strategies that you can employ to invest in mutual funds. The easiest and most common approach used by our subscribers is to use our Buy/Sell signal to purchase the funds based on our selection and ranking criteria, and sell them when the appropriate signal changes. This can be an effective strategy as our performance results indicate. On a Buy signal or during the buy period funds are purchased. On a Sell signal one moves into cash or in a money market fund. If a more aggressive approach is preferred an inverse fund can be bought during the Sell period, which equates to taking a short position as one does when investing in stocks.

Based on our effective methodology to select, rank and manage funds, the following investment strategies can be employed:

  • "Fund Selection": individual mutual- or index- fund selection using our "Selection & Ranking" lists. The chosen fund(s) are bought when our Signal changes to "Buy" and sold on our "Sell" signal.
  • "Portfolio Weighting": selection of two or more funds to make up a total portfolio. The selected funds can be the same for each Buy period (see our own Portfolios), or vary during the different signal periods. The idea behind this approach is to allocate your equity over a range of different funds with different risk and return profiles.
  • "Hedging": Rather than sell the funds in your portfolio during a Sell period, an inverse fund is bought to "hedge" against potential losses. Part of your equity (normally 20-40%) is used to purchase the inverse fund during a Sell period. When the signal changes back to "Buy" the inverse fund is sold and the money is used to augment your portfolio, for example by buying an index fund or ETF.
  • "Small Cap Correlation": During a Buy period purchase only funds with a high correlation to the Small Caps (Russell 2000). During a Sell period purchase only inverse funds or money market funds. Since our buy signal is dominated by the OTC and Russell 2000 indices, small cap funds should outperform the large cap funds during Buy periods.
  • "Index funds": For this approach we will only invest in index funds from Rydex, Profunds, Potomac or in ETF's and ishares, in order to eliminate any sales fees (loaded- and/or  early redemption- fees).

Fund Selection
Annual returns and other trading statistics for 100 funds are summarized in the table below, for "Long-only" positions. These particular funds correlate well with our Timing Signal. They represent a small selection of numerous funds that have performed remarkably well in the past with our timing signal. Various other fund selection lists are included in our Member's area.
